Linguistics and English Language 1A is a 20 credit course taken in Semester 1. LEL1A provides an introductory course to the structure and use of English and other languages.

It aims to give students an understanding of:

• The difference between descriptive and prescriptive approaches to language and grammer.
• The basic features of speech sounds, sound systems, word structure and sentence structure.
• The function of language as a vehicle for communication.
• Some of the special features of human language.
